When we first began developing our knitwear, we kept hearing the same thing from customers: “I love wearing a jumper, but I can’t wear wool.” Some found it itchy against their skin. Others wanted a knit they could wear and care for more easily. Those conversations helped shape our organic cotton knitwear collection.
Farmers grow organic cotton to certified organic standards. These standards prohibit genetically modified cotton and restrict the use of synthetic pesticides and fertilisers. Organic farmers also care for through practices such as crop rotation.
We choose organic cotton because we want to consider how the fibre grows and how the finished knit feels. It gives us a natural starting point for the soft, relaxed designs we develop with our knitters in Nepal.
Our knitters use yarns for our collection that are GOTS-certified organic cotton. GOTS stands for the Global Organic Textile Standard. It’s independent checks give us a recognised standard for the yarn we choose.
You don’t have to be allergic to wool to find it uncomfortable. That can turn a beautiful jumper into one they rarely wear. We wanted to offer a wool-free choice without giving up the texture and pleasure of wearing knitwear.
Cotton gives our knits a different feel. It is soft against the skin and easy to layer, whether you’re wearing a jumper over a shirt on a cool day or slipping one on when the temperature drops in the evening. It also suits the relaxed silhouettes and natural colours we love.
If you experience hot flushes during perimenopause or menopause, getting dressed can mean planning for a change in temperature at any moment. A cotton knit gives you a soft, wool-free layer that you can take off when you feel warm and put back on when you need it. Our relaxed shapes make layering easy, while different knit weights give you a choice for warmer and cooler days.
Another reason customers come back to our cotton knits is their everyday practicality. Our organic cotton knitwear is machine washable when you follow the garment care label, something many customers appreciate after years of hand-washing wool jumpers.
Our customers also tell us how well their cotton knits continue to look with regular wear. Cotton is a strong natural fibre and we pay close attention to the quality of the yarn and how each piece is knitted, so these are designs you can enjoy for years. Following the care label helps them keep their shape and appearance.
Cotton is also less appealing to clothes moths than wool, although it is still sensible to put any knitwear away clean. Our high quality cotton will not pill like wool can, but taking good care of your knitwear can make a difference.
Our pieces are made in small batches by skilled makers in Nepal, knitted on hand-operated machines and finished by hand. We work with our knitters on the weight, shape and details of each design, creating cotton knitwear that feels good to wear and fits easily into everyday life.
Those are the benefits of organic cotton that matter most to us: it answers a real request from our customers, gives us a natural fibre we love working with and helps us make the kind of knitwear we’re proud to share.
